Flickering in Black Hole Accretion discs

چکیده

We present an extension of the King et al. [1] model for the flickering of black hole accretion discs by taking proper account for the thermal properties of the disc. First we develop a one-dimensional, vertically averaged, one-zone model for an optically thick accretion disc and study the temporal evolution. This limits the current model to the so-called high/soft state, where the X-Ray spectrum is dominated by a thermal black-body component. Then we couple this disc model to the flickering process as described in King et al. [1]. Thus we consider the evolution of a poloidal magnetic field subject to a magnetic dynamo. By comparing to observations of X-Ray binaries in the high-soft state, we can constrain the strength of the energy density of the poloidal magnetic field to a few percent of the energy density of the intrinsic disc magnetic field.

Discs gone with the wind?

We examine the conditions imposed on the vertical structure of accretion discs for them to exist. We find that a wind powered by a thermal instability exists in all discs with certain opacity laws. We find that for discs dominated by bremsstrahlung radiation, an inner hole develops below a certain accretion rate, and that for very low accretion rates, discs may not form at all. The consequences...

Generalized Shock Solutions for Hydrodynamic Black Hole Accretion

For the first time, all available pseudo-Schwarzschild potentials are exhaustively used to investigate the possibility of shock formation in hydrodynamic, invicid, black hole accretion discs. It is shown that a significant region of parameter space spanned by important accretion parameters allows shock formation for flow in all potentials used in this work. This leads to the conclusion that the...

The Evolution of Black Hole Mass and Spin in Active Galactic Nuclei

Observations show that the central black hole in galaxies has a mass M only ∼ 10 of the stellar bulge mass. Thus whatever process grows the black hole also promotes star formation with far higher efficiency. We interpret this in terms of the generic tendency of AGN accretion discs to become self–gravitating outside some small radius Rsg ∼ 0.01− 0.1 pc from the black hole. We argue that mergers ...

Iron line profiles from black hole accretion discs with spiral velocity structure

We calculate the iron line profiles from accretion discs with spiral velocity structures around Schwarzschild black holes. We find that quasi-periodic bumps appear in the the profiles, thereby providing a test for spiral wave patterns. This study is motivated by recent work showing that spiral density waves can result from MHD instabilities even in non-self-gravitating discs, and by improved sp...

Black hole accretion discs: reality confronts theory

Disc spectra from highly luminous black hole binaries are observed to be rather simple, despite theoretical predictions to the contrary. We collate the disc-dominated spectra from multiple observations of 10 separate sources, and show that these overwhelmingly follow a multi-temperature disc blackbody spectrum with luminosity∝ T , and that such discs are stable. These results are in conflict wi...
